«Ches(t)s du’Champs»

CHESS-HOMAGE TO Duchamp

In 1918 Marcel Duchamp lived in Buenos Aires for nine months and created some of his works there. He lived at Alsina 1734 and his atelier was a few blocks away, at Sarmiento 1507. While producing his works of art, he used to play chess at some local clubs.

In his first restrospective exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum de Philadelphia, in 1963, “by or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Sélavy”, he played a chess game with the model Eve Babitz.

Concomitantly with the 40th anniversary of the retrospective exhibition held at Pasadena's Museum of Art, we -a group of visual artists- have initiated the task of organizing a Chess-Homage to Marcel Duchamp, which we have called "Ches(t)s du Champs".

PRESENTATION

It consists of a box that contains the following elements:

- 32 pieces of the game, each created by an artist, and the board.

- A book containing documents that show Marcel Duchamp's chess-related activities in Buenos Aires and reproductions of photographs of the city of Buenos Aires in 1918.

- A book containing information about both the project and each participating artist.

- A small gin bottle with two little glasses.

- A photograph based on one taken in 1963 by Julian Wasser during the exhibition at your Museum, where Duchamp played chess with model Eve Babitz.
