As we approach the 21 th century, those in charge of the

event: It will bring together 2000 WORKS OF ART
- ( Mail Art, paintings, drawings,
photograhs, computer graphics, Installation's photographs…)
- FROM 2000 ARTISTS, ALL OVER THE WORLD.
The main objective of this experimental exhibit is educational. The
responsibility of it’s running
- rests on the close partnership between
the Regional Direction of Contemporary Art (DRAC) a
- regional fund (FRAC PICARDIE) and other
official authorities. This is now our 21st public
- exhibition and an ever increasing number of
people are able to observe a great diversity of
- contemporary arts. The year 2000 project will
be a significant realisation of them all.
Many artists are already interested in the event and we would be very
happy to count you in;
- the number of works is what gives this event
it’s significance. We will be making a plaque to
- record the names of all participating artists
and a large publicity campaign will be launched
- at all media levels.
- The campaign will be advertised; in the press
( e.g. Art Press, Beaux Arts ), by the means of
- different contemporary art associations, by
the Internet and by word of mouth.
The various funding partners of the event are: DRAC PICARDIE (the
Culture ministary),

Town Council of Chauny and the Cultural and

an action plan of the event. This of course

- *** CALL OF THE ICONOCLAST !
i-con-o-clast
- 1. anyone opposed to the religious use of images or advocating the
destruction of such images.
- 2. a person who attacks or ridicules traditional or venerated institutions
or ideas regarded by him
- as erroneous or based on superstition.
I have been asked by the direction of the art Museum of Bassano del Grappa,
an historical town in
- Northern Italy, to act as curator of the
"mail art section" in a big exhibition that will take place
there
- in the summer of 2000. Titled "SENTIERI
INTERROTTI (Broken Paths) - Crisis of representation and
- iconoclasm in the arts from the 50s to the end
of the century", this show will be hosted on the three
- large floors of a beautiful historical
building and will include materials from various avantgarde
- movements such as Cobra, Lettrism, Gutaj,
Wiener Aktionismus, Fluxus, Visual Poetry and more.
For the mail art section, that together with Fluxus will take up most of the
upper floor, I intend to
- exhibit several collective projects selected
from the E.O.N. Archive (from the late 70s till the 90s),
- some important publications and a sample of
individual works (arranged chronologically from Ray
- Johnson to mail art on-line). I also want to
present at least one original collective project, specially
- conceived for this occasion. Following the
theme of the show, this project will be called The Table
- of the Little Iconoclast, a long white simple
table in the middle of the mail art room, with several big
- rubber stamps with nice wooden handles tied
with small chains to the sides, and over the table
- some large ink pads in different colours and
stacks of paper bearing the design of targets
- (concentric circles) over different symbolic
"icons" (faces of political leaders, religious leaders,
- media celebrities, well known corporate logos
or objects, famous artists, celebrated art-works, etc.).
- So the visitors will be encouraged to use the
rubber stamps as "weapons" in the iconoclastic act
of stamping out the target-images as they see fit, and then take (if they
want) the resulting "work"
- home. I hope in this way to give an idea of
the hands-on, collaborative, anyone-can-do-it aspect
- of mail art.
In the occasion of the exhibition, I also plan to print and distribute free
a special issue of ARTE
- POSTALE! magazine on the theme of ICONOCLASM:
so this is an INVITE for you to please send
- me anything iconoclastic (works in free size
& media) and/or a proposal for a rubber stamp image
- and/or one or more target-icons for the table
project. The maximum size for the black and white
- rubber stamp image is cm. 6 X 6 (2 3/8"):
within these limits you are free to give the shape you
- prefer to your rubber stamp, round, square,
triangular, whatever, but please stick to the
- "iconoclasm" theme (works with no
relation to the theme will not be used for the project).
Send the image for rubber stamps as close as possible to the actual size,
camera ready,
- and of course do not use half-tones or small
details that would not transfer well to the rubber
- medium. For the target-icons, send one or more
black-and-white images easy to reproduce
- (photos, collages, etc.), I will enlarge or
reduce them to the right size and add the target
- motif over the image.
- The rubber stamp proposals and the other
materials received will be reproduced in the special
- ICONOCLASM issue of ARTE POSTALE!, only a
selection of images will be transformed in real
- rubber stamps for the show but ALL those who
will contribute in ANY way to this project will
- receive a free copy of the magazine (with at
least their name listed in it) in Summer 2000.
Deadline: January 31, 2000
Mail to: Vittore Baroni: Via C. Battisti 339 - 55049
Viareggio - Italy
Please participate, be iconoclastic !

- *** LIVING IN THE MIRROR - An international
mail art show for children
Kidscommons, an American children's museum, and ARTColumbus, a group of
visual artists, are
- sponsoring a children's mail art show in
celebration of the new millennium and the 30th anniversary
- of Earth Day. Collaborating with a Belgian
mail artist, we hope to provide children the opportunity
- to express positive ideas about the future
through the universal language of the visual arts.
Mail art was popularized in the '60s by Ray Johnson of the New York
Correspondence School,
- and many contemporary artists use the art form
to express themselves. It's easy to participate
- in a mail art show, and there are no juries or
fees to pay in order to enter. Also there are usually
- no limitations placed on the materials and
techniques an artist can use. He or she simply illustrates
- the announced theme and mails the work.
We'll tie our mail art show into Earth Day 2000, a worldwide
celebration commemorating the 30th
- anniversary of this special day set aside to
honor Mother Earth. While Earth Day will take place in
- just a 24-hour period, there will be thousands
of observances and programs leading up to it.
We'll use the occasion to encourage children to reuse materials when making
their entries. Reuse
- helps save the energy and natural resources
necessary to make new art materials, and it saves
- the landfill space needed to dispose of solid
waste.
Children's Mail Art Show Call for Entry
+ Eligibility: Children through 12 years of age
+ Theme: "Living in the Mirror"
Draw a self portrait, create a piece of art which shows your hopes and
dreams for the future,
- especially the environment, or make art which
illustrates what you want to be when you grow up
- or how you will dress and live.
+ Size, background, and media: Create the mail art on a
4"x6" post card. A card of this size is the
- largest that can be mailed in the United
States without having to add extra postage. The art does
- not have to be done on an "official"
post card, just something of similar weight. Try to reuse a light
- weight piece of card stock for your entry, or,
if you prefer, mail a larger drawing in an envelope.
- You may create the art with any technique, and
all media are acceptable, including collage,
- markers, crayons, pen and ink, colored
pencils, rubber stamps, tempera, and watercolor.
+ Show Rules: No fees, no jury, and no returns. All work will be
exhibited.
Print your first and last names, age, street address, city, state, zip
code and country somewhere
- on your entry. Include your province, if
applicable. Teachers, scout leaders, and other care givers
- can mail many entries together, thereby saving
mailing costs.
+ Exhibit: All work will be shown at the children's museum. At the
end of the show, the cards
- will be packed into old suitcases and hat
boxes to tour the Bartholomew County elementary
- schools. Children will have the opportunity to
handle the cards, and to see the art and study
- the stamps and post marks.
Documentation will be provided to all children who enter. The form which the
recognition takes will
- depend on the number of entries the museum
receives. If possible, a list of children's names and
- countries will be mailed to each child or care
giver who enters on behalf of his or her group.
- Otherwise, all names, first name and last

CONFERENCIA - Clemente Padín - Uruguay
- Estimados amigos, Como Uds. saben, soy
- entero.
Rom, cassettes 3 y 1/2 o diapositivas o transparencias.
1999.

- *** LET'S START COMMUNICATION
- e-mail from Vesna Milicevic to Luc Fierens
Vesna Milicevic: ves.mil@yubc.net
- on 30-07-99 21:39:23
- Dear Luc Fierens,
Yesterday I sent you email asking you to check if a italian lady who
organizes the project
- "Swallow" has till now received
my artwork. Today I've got a reply so do not bother yourself
- about this. Anyway
thanks.
In your latest letter you wrote that we need to communicate and called to
stop decoration.
- It is very hard for me to believe the art
can change the world especially after recent events but
- it could certainly alleviate the pain and
despair showing the better, extraordinary world of an artist.
As a professional painter and citizen of Europe at least, I'm deeply
affected by the fact that some
- of the oldest Christianity monuments in
Kosovo (13th and 14th century), are being fired or badly
- damaged during last few months by albanian
terrorists in front of the eyes of Peacekeeping mission
- of UN. These monasteries and churches
represent a prove of serbian devotion to Christian tradition
- and their high artistic and historical value
cannot be estimated but we are in position (I mean to
- all of us, not just people in Serbia) to
watch this devastation and do nothing to prevent bigger
- catastrophe.
- Now when the Serbs in Kosovo as the victims of
albanian terrorists running away from their homes
nobody talks about human rights and nobody cries looking serbian refugees.
Of course there are
- no enough tears for all, the world has
already cried watching pictures of albanian refugees. This
- staff about Yugoslavia becomes too
boring. Now it is time for new, more excited war. (Of course
- american airforces are not out of work,
they're still bombing Iraq but it is just exercise and
- preparation for something bigger.)
There is a song of Manic Street Preachers, and I'll finish the letter with
it. "IF YOU TOLERATE
- THIS THAN YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE
NEXT".
So in the name of justice, and possible better world order we should open
the eyes, look around
- us and communicate because the lack of
communication is the lack of the truth.
Dear Luc, if you like you can use this letter and send it to other
networkers.You have my
- permission and I am ready to participate
in any project that can help in spreading the truth and
- unmasking an evil. Best wishes
from ... Vesna Milicevic ... Belgrade

- (antiguamente llamado Parque Urbano).
